Brainspotting™
“Brainspotting is based on the profound attunement of the therapist with the patient, finding a somatic cue and extinguishing it by down-regulating the amygdala. It isn’t just PNS (Parasympathetic Nervous System) activation that is facilitated, it is homeostasis” – Robert Scaer
Brainspotting is a focused, brain-body therapeutic method designed to help people access, process and release sources of emotional and physiological pain, trauma, dissociation and other challenging symptoms by identifying specific points in a client’s visual field—called brainspots—that correlate with unresolved experiences held in the deep subcortical brain which talk therapy cannot access.
It is both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool: by guiding clients to attend to eye positions associated with strong emotional or bodily responses, practitioners help the nervous system bring implicit, non-verbal material into awareness so it can be processed and discharged.
Brainspotting is often supported by bilateral sound stimulation (e.g., BioLateral audio), which many clinicians use to deepen focus and regulation during processing.
Brainspotting functions within the context of a neurobiological therapeutic relationship. The method enhances the empathic, attuned presence of a skilled clinician who provides safety, containment, and trust so that a person can explore experiences that lie beyond conscious language and cognitive control
Within this therapeutic relationship, Brainspotting provides a tool to neurobiologically locate, focus, process, and release material that is often inaccessible to conventional talk-based approaches.
By working directly with the body’s central nervous system—including autonomic and limbic structures—Brainspotting is understood to engage deep brain–body networks involved in emotional and somatic regulation, with significant psychological, emotional, and physical effects reported by clients and clinicians.
I had a profound experience during my first Brainspotting session, which sparked a deep curiosity about the work. This led me to complete the second ever Brainspotting training offered by Dr. David Grand which was in 2004. In 2013, he invited me to serve as the Australian Brainspotting Trainer, and in 2021 he graciously honoured me with the Brainspotting Leadership Award.
Parts Work
I include “Parts Work” in therapy as a gentle, collaborative approach that recognizes we are made up of different internal “parts” or subpersonalities—each with its own feelings, needs, and roles. By getting to know and understand these parts, we can resolve inner conflicts, increase self-awareness, and create greater harmony within ourselves.
A simple way to understand these “parts”—especially if the concept feels unfamiliar or a bit intimidating or scary—is this:
Imagine you’re at your favourite restaurant and they have your absolute favourite dessert tonight, which isn’t always on the menu. You love it—but your doctor has advised you to watch your cholesterol. Now you have a dilemma:
- One part of you wants the dessert because it brings pleasure.
- Another part of you wants to honour your health goals.
We ALL have parts like this, and they’re often in conflict with one another. It can feel chaotic when different parts want different things—but each part has a positive intention, even if its behaviour feels unhelpful or confusing.
Parts work helps us pause, learn from these parts, and find ways to support them so that you can make choices that feel more integrated and aligned with your goals and values.
Somatic & Energy Healing
The most meaningful and transformative chapter of my academic journey was earning a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica in Los Angeles, USA.
This experience gave me profound insights into the Soul’s journey and fundamentally changed the course of my life and work. My passion for this field was so deep that in 1996 I had the honour of being named Student of the Year
Spiritual Psychology is the study and practice of the art and science of Conscious Awakening.
“We must learn how to not only embrace who we are as spiritual beings having a human experience but also use that recognition as a foundation for “healing.” As the evolutionary tide is rising and large numbers of people are beginning to awaken to the awareness that they are, in fact, Divine Beings having a human experience, the Principles and Practices of Spiritual Psychology provide both a context and tools for living into that awareness in everyday life.”
